Goodbye Hugo

Dear friends,
Sadly, despite all the vibes and thoughts you kindly sent over, and were well received, my Hugo boy has crossed the bridge this morning, shortly after I left him at the vets to start the fluids therapy.
The diagnosis was the feared enterotoxaemia, an infection with little chance of survival for the bunnies. The vet supposed that the tooth infection had already migrated to the bloodstream, and the antibiotic wasn't enough to keep it at bay, despite the dosage. The other possibility is that the antibiotic, killing some batteria, also got some good bacteria from the guts, creating an imbalance resulting in the enteritis. I guess I will never know, because I am not going to have a postmortem done.
Miss Eve said goodbye to him - I put him in the living room with the carrier, so she could see where he was - and kept returning to see him every now and then. She seemed to have accepted that he was gone, but when I put down the green plastic tube to keep her occupied while I was cleaning the floor of the crate, she rushed in and out sniffing and making a tiny sound that she normally does when thumping, something she does when she's disapproving of me...poor girl, she was looking for him, smelling his scent but not seeing him anywhere as the smell suggested... it was so heartbreaking...
Off now downstairs to keep some company to Miss Eve... sleep tight, my Hugo bunny...

Yowlyy... I truly feel your pain. I lost little Myntti today. He died at the vet's office before anything could be done. He became very ill on 25 Dec and I took care of him at home after a visit to the emergency clinic. I'm exhausted and sad. Not the best christmas ever.

Oh, Gabriella, I'm so so sorry about Hugo. I don't know what to say.. I was hoping so much that he would pull through.. rest in peace, Hugo. Be happy at the bridge.

Hugs to you and Miss Eve.

Oh, gosh, I am so sorry G., hardly know what to say and wish I could really do something to help out you and Miss Eve.....all we could do was make a little post. It seems so unfair that creatures so well loved and so lovely have to leave.......Hugs to all.

I'm so sorry. I worried last night and this morning, hoping he'd be okay. It's nature's kindness to them that they go so fast when they become ill, but it breaks our hearts. It only compounds our frustration when they become ill over a holiday and we can't even give them every chance.

I'm sure my Tid was there to meet him at the Bridge and show him where all the best clover is.

When we let our friends go, their pain is over, but it means we have to bear it instead. Hugs to you and Miss Eve, who will need all the love you can bear to give her.

There is a sacredness in tears.
They are not the mark of weakness,
but of power.
They speak more eloquently
than 10,000 tongues.
They are the messengers
of overwhelming grief,
of deep contrition,
and of unspeakable love.

You are in our thoughts. We will miss Sir Hugo.

aw man, this stinks. i am so very sorry to hear Hugo left you and Miss Eve. I am glad he let you hold him before you took him in again and I know that gave him peace to feel the warmth of your comforting him and i also know that probably comforted you.

my heart is breaking for you. How awesome that you commissioned their portrait before this happened, makes it extra special. Archi Ann died right after Jo at higglety pigglety had put her in the print she did of the mid summers eve party and it has since been a very special treasure for me.

hugs and prayers for you from across the pond

Our thought have pretty much been said by everyone here...we are so sorry that it was Hugo's time to go to the bridge. We wish there was something we could say or do to make the pain go away, but we know that you and Miss Eve will have to work it our yourselves. We are sending hugs to you and our thoughts will be with you. Binky on, Hugo. We will miss you.
